Who owns space? Who shapes it and who is it actually created for? PIKPorre Kollektiv will address these questions by placing three seemingly sketchy benches in three different, historically and socially-charged locations.

The beginning will be marked on July 2nd with the installation of three replica church pews at the site of the former St. Jürgens Church. This place of spiritual gathering, which had existed for centuries, was relocated in 1909 to make room for Kiel's growing main railway station. This piece of city history forms the starting point of the work. The church pews serve both symbolically and figuratively for the institution of the church and for the question of interpretive sovereignty in a society.

The intervention at the main station is the first part of a trilogy in which the sketchy benches are rebuilt at each new location in order to raise a new question about interpretive sovereignty at the location: In the castle courtyard, one of the three benches will be converted into a secular, stately Renaissance bench, and at the site of the former Thaulow Museum, one will be converted into a bourgeois park bench in keeping with the motif of the park by the filled-in brick pond.

This ultimately creates three different benches with different "masters," all of whom can interact with each other. They invite passers-by to linger and thus open up a view of the surrounding space and the people who use it.

Founded by the artist collective PIKPorree
2022 out of the joy of working together, the current three-member performance and intervention collective (PIK) Porree is primarily an actor in the urban living space. The aim is to create astonishment and moments of pause. With short sketches or elaborately created, sometimes absurd scenarios, they address topics such as care, household, community and availability - always with the aim of not losing sight of the humorous aspect of art alongside a substantive examination. Since their foundation in 2022, they have regularly carried out performances and interventions and have looked for ways to expand their work in the context of art exhibitions, such as most recently in “reality render°vous” (Stadtgalerie Kiel 2024) or Einblick/Ausblick (2023).
