Artistic practice as material research – David Karl, Technical University Berlin

Guest lecture at the invitation of Prof. Axel Loytved
Artistic practice in materials science

“Scientists from the Department of Ceramic Materials at TU Berlin, in cooperation with the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, have for the first time produced complex components from simulated Martian soil and demonstrated the theoretical possibility of producing stable vessels such as vases using only resources from the red planet.” - dpa press release, Nov. 2018

*David Karl, born in 1984, lives in Berlin. After studying Fine Art at the Braunschweig University of Art (Diploma) and the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London (MFA), he went on to study Materials Science, which he completed in 2021 with a PhD on the topic of 3D printing of ceramics on Mars. He is currently a lecturer and researcher at the Technical University of Berlin and Adjunct Professor of Space Resources at the Colorado School of Mines.
