you and me and a book makes three

The KUNST HEFTE series documents an 11-year collaboration between the book design department and the various liberal arts classes at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts. Two students from the two departments always work together. Together they develop a light publication that explores how an artistic work could be translated into a book object. Which format could be interesting, which folding, which material, which binding, what does the font used look like? With this tandem process, both can learn with and from each other and thus benefit from the knowledge, mindset, ideas and expressive possibilities of the other.

The first 8 booklets were developed in 2012, in cooperation with the media class and the sculpture department. Since then, a total of 65 publications have been produced, the last 17 in the winter semester 2023/24. These are often the artists' first publications. They are printed in small editions, mostly produced by hand and together form a growing archive of artists' positions at the university.

The exhibition “you and me and a book makes three” includes all 65 KUNST HEFTE. A display specially designed for the exhibition presents the special features of the 17 new editions of the fifth series and provides a unique approach to the genre of the artist's book. 

Every Tuesday at 6 pm there will be a book launch in which individual booklets will be presented in more detail and in which the couples will explain how they came to this form of publication, which artistic ideas were transferred to the medium of the book and what processes, aberrations and experiments looked like.
